Follow Charlie and Jane on their trip around Australia
Saturday, 28 May 2011
Well here we are again day 6 into our trip and we have only got as far a Hughenden!! After picking up the caravan at Townsville after having the service (gulp, gulp with the bill!!) we headed off to a place we were told about near Charters Towers called Fletchers Creek. It is a free camp area and is right by the creek. Beautful place and very relaxing!!. We met some lovely people called Honey and Franz (Swiss German) who live in the Noosa Hinterland and originally came from Adelaide. Charlie quickly teamed up with Franz and they fished and had quite a lot of success so it was smoked fish for hors d'ouevres on the first night. Unfortunately we didn't have any nets because the red claw were plentiful - next time. Sacrifices had to be made in the name of fishing, so the second morning we were there, a big cooked brekkie had to be had so that Charlie could have some sausages for bait - the things I do for that man!!! I'm going to have success growing my bum for the pink checked shorts a lot sooner than I thought!!
We had campfires and cooked a lovely meal in the camp oven with potatoes done in foild in the fire which was all yummy. The night sky was amazing with the stars and constellations brilliant. But is is very very cold at night and in the mornings so at Charters Towers we bought an extra blanket for the bed, polar fleeces for us both and a little gas heater for the van for when we are off power.
Yesterday we reluctantly left Fletchers Creek and headed towards Hughenden and free camped at Campaspe River which was ok but not a patch on Fletchers Creek and today we arrived in Hughenden and are staying in the caravan park because we need to power up all the batteries and I needed to do mundane things like washing. This is the Fawlty Towers of the caravan world and we met Basil himself this morning!!
Give me free camping any day.
Anywy only staying one night here - have also met some other people here who were camped with us last night, so its off to Happy Hour soon. Am having trouble working out this blog so need to talk to Sandy to help. Hopefully will do better next time. Tomorrow heading towards Camoweal - that's all for now folks.

First Day of Our Round Australia Trip
After waiting sooooo long to follow the dream the 22nd May came around sooooo quickly. We left Cannonvale this morning after a bit of a tearful (me) goodbye to our good friends Gwen and Ian and Annie who came and had a coffee with us at the caravan park we stayed in for a couple of nights while we were fine tuning everything. Thanks for the St. Christopher Gwen and Ian - hopefully he will keep us safe during our long journey!!
This is a bit of a boring blog really because we are only going to Townsville initially because Captain Charlie Check-It has the caravan booked in to the Townsville Caravan Centre tomorrow morning for a service before we really set off. At the moment we are free camping at Alligator Creek Roadhouse and have met a few other caravanners/campers doing the same thing. After a nice bbq for dinner, we are settling down for the evening before heading off tomorrow.
Adieu for now and hopefully our next blog will be a lot more interesting but I suppose we have to start somewhere!!!
